JGA Quick Facts

Topic of the week:  Practice! Practice! Practice!
"The more I practice, the luckier I get."  Both Arnold Palmer and Gary Player have been credited with this quote.  Regardless of who said it first, it has a lot of truth.  It's not just coincidence how Tiger Woods seems to get all the good breaks - he practices more than any other golfer.  Can you realistically expect to get better without practicing?  You wouldn't expect to play a guitar or piano without some instruction and a lot of practice.

How do I practice?  Going to the driving range a couple of times a week is the best way to practice your swing fundamentals.  However, if the first club you pull out of your bag is the driver, you're not practicing - you're exercising.  Start with a wedge or a 9-iron, then gradually work your way up to the longer clubs.  Hit every shot with a purpose!  Aim at a target and make your best possible swing every time.  Watch the ball until it stops moving.  I've seen many people on the range with two balls in motion at the same time - again, this is exercise, not practice.

50% of your golf game is around the putting green, accordingly, you should spend 50% of your practice time on short game.  Allow an extra 15 minutes before every round to hit some practice putts and/or chips.  Before and after hitting balls at the driving range, take a few minutes to practice your putting and chipping.

I don't have time to practice!  Since most of us don't play golf for a living, we're not expected to play and practice 8-12 hours a day like the professionals do.  Remember, it's better to practice 10 minutes every day than it is to set aside 3 hours once a week.  Go outside in your lawn each night and make practice swings.  Inserting a tee in the ground and trying to "clip" it out of the ground is great practice.  Work on balance and tempo.  Hit some chip shots around the yard.  It will not only relax you after a long day of work, it will help your golf game too!

Rule of the Week:  23.  Loose Impediments

(JGA Activity:  Use your Rule book to find the definition of "Loose Impediment".)

23-1. Relief

Except when both the loose impediment and the ball lie in or touch the same hazard, any loose impediment may be removed without penalty.

If the ball lies anywhere other than on the putting green and the removal of the loose impediment by the player causes the ball to move, Rule 18-2a applies.

On the putting green, if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved in the process of removing a loose impediment, the ball or ball-marker must be replaced.  There is no penalty, provided the movement of the ball or ball-marker is directly attributable to the removal of the loose impediment.  Otherwise, if the player causes the ball to move, he incurs a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a.

When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed.

Note:  If the ball lies in a hazard, the player must not touch or move any loose impediment lying in or touching the same hazard - see Rule 13-4c.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE:
Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes.

12 & Under Instructional:
Tee Times for playing at Red Arrow are posted online here.  If you need to change a time or think you should move up from 3 holes to 6 holes, let us know by email or when you check in Tuesday.  It's ok to come at a different time as long as you are patient with us getting you onto the golf course.

Remember, parents are encouraged to walk with their children while playing at Red Arrow.  Parents are allowed to caddy and/or give advice in this age division, but we'd prefer the players do as much on their own as possible.  Parents should refrain from "over coaching".

The August 15th 12 & Under Championship will be divided into two tournaments:  The 12 & Under Tournament group will play at Grand Prairie and the 12 & Under Instructional group play at Red Arrow.  Please confirm if you will be playing on the 15th and if you would like to move from the Instructional group to the Tournament group by email or on Tuesday morning when you check in.  Click here to see who we have heard from and how many holes each player is signed up for.  Tee times will be posted online by August 12th.  Players moving up to the Tournament group will play by the Tournament rules - no caddies or advice from parents.  Players in the Instructional group at Red Arrow will continue to play 6 holes or 3 holes.

Junior Golf Leagues:
** There are many players who have make-up games to be played.  Please play them as soon as possible, or let us know if you will not be able to make a them up.  We'd like to update the team scores so everyone knows where their team stands.

** Click here to visit and bookmark the Junior Golf Leagues home page.  You will find all updated information on this page.  Scores, handicaps, points, and JL1 event winners are all posted online.

** Please download and read the League guidelines

** The week of August 18th will be the final week for leagues.  All make-up rounds must be completed before the last league day.  Here is the schedule for playing and league luncheons:

Monday, August 18:
JL1 will shotgun start at 8:45.  JL2 will shotgun at 12:00.  (Shotgun means all players start at the same time but on different holes.)  All players should arrive by 8:30/11:45 to get checked in and receive their scorecards.  Since both leagues are so large, we will sign up and play with 5 players per group.  Players are allowed to play a make-up round ahead of time and just come to the luncheon.  Luncheon times are scheduled for 11:00 (JL1) and 2:00 (JL2).  Awards and prizes will be distributed during the luncheon.

Wednesday, August 20:
JL3 will shotgun start at 11:00.  Luncheon time is scheduled for 1:00.  Awards and prizes will be distributed during the luncheon.

Thursday, August 21:
JL4 will shotgun start at 11:00.  Luncheon time is scheduled for 1:00.  Awards and prizes will be distributed during the luncheon.

Please let us know if you are unable to play or attend the luncheon on your final day.

** Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tee time to get checked in and to receive your scorecard.  Your tee time is the time you should be hitting your first shot, not the time you arrive at the golf course!
