2008 Player of the Year Announced
Sheldon Keyte, age 17, has been named the 2008 JGA Player of the Year. Keyte, a senior at Hackett High School, becomes the first multiple JGA Player of the Year. He also won the honor in 2006. Keyte had an amazing year winning 3 of the 4 events he entered including the 2-day JGA Championship and finishing with a 71.6 scoring average. "I'm very happy with how I played this summer", says Keyte. "I finished 2nd at an AJGA event in West Virginia this summer, and I hope to continue my career in college at a Division I school." His name will be added to the JGA Player of the Year trophy on display at Milham Park Golf Club. “I’m honored to win the award again. It's nice to have my name on the trophy twice." "Sheldon is a great student of the game", says JGA Director Dean Marks. "I expect him to do very well in college." Keyte was not the only player to play well this year. David Harsini, a senior from Portage Central won the Angels Crossing event by shooting a 2 under par 70 that included an eagle on the 18th hole. Harsini finished 2nd in three other events and finished the season with a 73.3 scoring average. In the Girls division, Brittany Haight, a Sophomore from Otsego, won the 2-day Girls Championship at Milham Park as well as the event at Pine View shooting 84 in all three rounds. Laura Glass, a Sophomore from Portage Northern, played all 7 events for the girls, winning 3 and finishing 3rd in another. The JGA had another successful season with 385 participants divided into 4 age groups and participating in 30 total events. The JGA was established in 1987 with the purpose of providing quality golf experiences for area juniors at affordable rates.
