2005 John Block - JGA Scholarship Winners Announced DiGiovanni, Gilman win
Block golf scholarships David DiGiovanni and Jay Gilman are the latest receipents of the John Block Junior Golf Association scholarship, which honors academic achievement, citizenship and JGA participation. Each will receive a $1,500 scholarship toward his first year's tuition. DiGiovanni, a recent graduate of Loy Norrix High School and the son of former Kalamazoo City Manager Pat DiGiovanni, plans to attend Purdue University. "It's a relief to get money since I'm going out of state," said DiGiovanni, who also won the Clarence L. Remynse Scholarship this year. Gilman, a recent graduate of Mattawan High School, plans to attend Kalamazoo Valley Community College before transferring to Ferris State University where he plans to pursue a career in golf management. "It was a surprise," Gilman said. "My parents were happy. They were expecting a call before, but I wasn't." Former Gazette sports writer John Block introduced the scholarship in 1997, and since then 23 area student-athletes have received a total of $31,500. (article reprinted by permission)
