MEET STEVE TYLER
Steve Tyler began his reign as Director of Golf for the KMGA on January 1, 2008. After 10 years at The Moors and 4 years at The Prairies, Steve returns to the course that got him started in golf.
This morning when I awoke, the radio declared that Punxsutawney Phil had seen his shadow, promising 6 more weeks of winter. We probably have all lived in this area long enough to know that Phil is rarely wrong, however, I’m very excited to get 2008 started with a warm spring and hot summer.
The Kalamazoo Municipal Golf Association exists to provide the highest quality public golf. Needless to say, I’m very thrilled and excited to be part of this wonderful organization. As a youth in this area, I grew up playing at Milham, worked here, and Jim Roschek was also my high school golf coach. It was truly an honor to be picked as his replacement and I can only hope to provide wonderful customer service to all our members and their guests. If you’re in the area please stop by and say hello. It will take me awhile to remember everyone. My staff and I will be attending the Kalamazoo Community Golf Show on Saturday, February 16th from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. There will be many wonderful items to purchase at discounted prices for all your golfing endeavors.
The KMGA and my staff have many challenges in front of us. Change will be encouraged to help us through this difficult economy. It’s my focus to keep the KMGA mission statement as the engine for our residents of the city and the surrounding community. We will continue the spirit of teamwork and elevate our standards to keep our facilities the envy of the state. If you ever have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to pass them along, my door is rarely closed. As the season progresses I will continue to keep everyone abreast of our undertakings. Until then stay warm and hope that Phil just might be mistaken.
Swing Easy, Steve
MEETING TIGER AND ARNIE
While attending the first day of the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Steve and Jeff stopped at a Starbuck's for some morning coffee. As they pulled in, Tiger Woods walked right in front of their car. They followed him inside and chatted with him as he ordered his Grande Latte. Since there were no other customers in the store, it only took about 30 seconds for his order and their meeting with Golf's #1 was over. Why couldn't Starbucks have been a little busier?!? (By the way, Tiger was not driving a Buick.)
On Saturday, Steve and Jeff went to play at Bay Hill. While Jeff was warming up on the range, Steve chatted with Arnold Palmer by the first tee. Sometimes it doesn't pay to warm up before your round!
WHAT'S HOT FROM THE PGA SHOW
The Wednesday prior to the PGA Show is a Demo Day with almost every club
manufacturer on a 360 degree driving range. Steve, Jeff and Caitlan all
attended and tested new equipment until the sun set.
Ping was probably #1 overall. The new i10 and G10 irons are awesome, extremely solid. The new G10 woods and hybrids are going to be hard to beat. Ping putters will also make a return back to Milham this year.
Callaway has a NEW system called imix. This system is sold by components. You buy a driver head and your choice of shafts. The available heads are FTi and FT5. We will have the imix system in our shop in mid-March. Odyssey putters look and feel great. The new Sabertooth and XG Tour putters are going to be HOT!!!
Mizuno has new irons the MP57 and MX 950 both irons are very good. We will still stock the MP 67, MP 60, MX 25 and MX19. The new driver is called the MP 600, this driver has Fast Track Technology. The weights slide on a track on the sole of the driver to change heel and toe weighting.
