MAY IS PGA FREE LESSON
MONTH!
PGA professionals Jim Roschek, Dean Marks and Paul
Simonds at Milham Park and Eastern Hills will once again offer free
10-minute lessons in May in conjunction with “PGA Free Lesson Month” the
national growth-of-the-game campaign and a joint partnership between The PGA
of America, Golf Digest, Golf For Women, and The Golf Channel.
Nike Golf is the official sweepstakes sponsor.
“PGA Free Lesson Month is a great opportunity for local
non-golfers to come out and get introduced to the game of golf, or for
existing golfers to focus on any area they want to improve,” says Jim
Roschek, Director of Golf at Milham and Eastern.
“We welcome all those who would like to participate and
encourage them to bring a friend or family member and come out and have some
fun, regardless of skill level.”
In addition to getting a free golf lesson, every
golfer who takes a free lesson will be entered with his or her PGA
Professional for a chance to win a Grand Prize sweepstakes package which
includes a three-day getaway vacation to Orlando, an appearance on The Golf
Channel and a custom-fit set of Nike clubs, footwear, apparel and more.
Sweepstakes cards will be available at either pro shop or look for
one in the May issue of Golf Digest, the May/June issue of Golf
For Women or the April 8 issue of Golf World.
Call either Pro Shop to sign up.
LINK
UP 2 GOLF
If
you didn’t hear of Link Up 2 Golf last season, there’s a good chance you
will hear of it this season. It
will be nationally advertised by the PGA of America and supported locally by
many PGA professionals. Link Up
2 Golf is a program designed to introduce more people to the game of golf.
It is designed to be a fun, easy way to learn the basics of golf in a
relaxed atmosphere with approximately a 6-1 student to PGA professional
instructor ratio. If you know
of anyone who would like to learn how to play golf, send them to the www.playgolfamerica.com
website, check Link Up 2 Golf, enter your ZIP code and click “Search”.
You’ll see that Milham Park, Eastern Hills, Grand Prairie and other
local courses all have instructional clinics posted that you can sign up
for.
MOTHER’S DAY IS MAY 8th!
Milham Park is
fully stocked with new women’s clothing from Tommy Hilfiger and EP Pro.
Also in stock are over 300 pair of women’s shoes from Ecco, Nike,
Foot-Joy, Callaway, Adidas and Etonic.
New clubs from Cobra, Taylor Made, Mizuno & Callaway along with
golf bags from Burton, Bennington and Sun Mountain make great gifts.
Other ideas include Guest Passes for rounds of golf or lessons from a
PGA Professional. Gift
certificates are always available.
SOME
TIPS ON PLAYING MILHAM & EASTERN
Milham Park is an old style course built in 1931.
Greens of this era are called “push up” greens because they built
the greens complexes by pushing the soil from the surrounding areas to the
green location. This type of
green is generally tilted from front to back.
It is important for the player to never, never, never go over the
green. If you are between clubs
always choose the shorter of the two. Rarely
challenge a back pin position. The
sixty degree wedge is an ideal club to use around the greens at Milham.
The “sixty” maximizes the loft of the shot which will settle on
the Milham greens softer, with less roll.
Eastern Hills plays the opposite.
A “Parkland” style course with many of the green side bunkers set
forward of the green by 5 to 10 yards.
Coming up short at Eastern could lead to the hardest shot in golf
(the long bunker shot). Therefore,
always use enough club and when you are in between on distance, consider the
longer club. The green
complexes at Eastern are much flatter and pitching and chipping are
basically the same from all four sides of the green.
Practice your “bump and run” type chips to lower your scores at
Eastern.
