KMGA Newsletter – July 1, 2002

SUMMER NEWSLETTER

As the first of July stares us right in the face we want to talk to you a little bit about what is ahead for the rest of the summer.  The spring was one of the worst on record and I’m sure everyone has not played as much golf as they wanted to.  Let’s make the next eight weeks filled with a lot of golfing activities.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

The KMGA Match Play tourney is in full swing and rounds two and three must be completed this month.

Our monthly member-member event will be held at Milham Park on Sunday, July 21st.  We are making an effort on this event to welcome more of our women members by adding some extra divisions in this best ball event.  Prizes will be available for male/male, male/female, and female/female teams.  All women will play from the red tees.  The cost is $20.00 per team and t-times are given out at sign-up.  To get the best t-times, sign up now.

The last big event in July is the Buick Scramble.  This four-person scramble event will be held July 27th at Milham Park.  This well-known national event (formally the Oldsmobile Scramble) is a popular one with the local winners moving to a sectional tournament.  Ask the golf staff about this event and the requirements of forming a team.

SPRING WEATHER

The poor spring has placed the golf courses behind the eight ball with regards to our 2002 budget.  Golf lost in the spring is hard to make up and I am asking for a little help for the rest of the summer.  When you are making up your games try to fill your foursomes with some green fee players.  If someone asks you to play nine, say how about Milham or Eastern.  If we can keep our members playing at home, and have them bring their non-member friends to our course, we go a long way at making up the spring deficit.  In doing so, everyone will benefit.

RON WILLIAMS

Kudos to our superintendent Ron Williams for the remarkable job he has done with all three golf courses this spring.  I have never seen them in better condition and much of the credit is due Ron and his assistants Wayne Nye Jr. (Milham) and Brian Morgan (Eastern Hills).   Ron is a Michigan State Turf School grad originally from Holland, Michigan.  He has been with us for two years but this is his first year as the lead guy.  He is fun to work with, brings a lot of knowledge to the table, and has a lot of pride in his work.  We are lucky to have him and if you agree, let him know.

SUMMER SALES

The poor spring has left us with some extra inventory so we are going to start our fall sales much earlier this year.  Keep an eye on the jottings or tuned to your radio for special sales through July and August.  Beginning July 1st, we will be having our annual wedge or putter trade-in sale where you can get a minimum of $10.00 on any putter and $15.00 on any wedge you trade-in towards a new one.  So search the basement or the garage and bring in the worst putter or wedge you have because it is worth $$$ at the golf shops.
