KMGA Newsletter – August, 2002

August News

With one full summer month remaining in the 2002 golf season, let’s make it a month full of golf and golfing activities.  Two more big events on the KMGA golf calendar this month:  Our annual club championship is August 24-25 and the popular KMGA four-man scramble is Saturday, August 31st.

Club Championship

This annual event is held at Eastern Hills and Milham Park the last full weekend of August.  It is a 36-hole medal play event with all participants flighted by their USGA handicaps.  Entry fee is $20.00 per person and you can sign up at either clubhouse.

Historically, an annual membership was given to each flight winner.  The value of a single membership in 1982 was $160.00.  Today the value is $625.00.  In these more difficult economic times for golf courses, the Board of Governors has decided to not offer a membership for the champion of each flight.  We will still have a great tournament, lots of special events and camaraderie, but less emphasis on the big prize.  It has been a great deal for those who have won in the past and I am sure that they appreciated the prize.  In the future we will conduct our club championships like 99.9% of the other courses across the country- a competitive tournament with appropriate prizes to the winners.

The USGA and The Royal and Ancient Society

A lot of conversation in the golf world about the recent USGA ruling on spring-effect on golf clubs.  What the USGA has ruled has three major provisions:

1)      The Coefficient of Restitution  (COR) limit remains at 0.830 for all play in the United States.  Scores may be posted for handicap purposes only when achieved with clubs that satisfy the 0.830 limit (no ERC II or Taylor Made 500 series)

2)      Beginning Jan.1, 2003 both the USGA and the Royal and Ancient will enforce the 0.830 limit in tournaments

3)      The R& A will implement a COR limit of 0.830 beginning Jan.1, 2008 for all levels of play in the remainder of the world.

Putters and Drivers

Manufacturers have come to their senses and have recently dropped prices on existing drivers.  Where a year ago you were paying $429.95 to $499.95 for the newest and latest driver, prices have dropped almost across the board to levels from $299.95 to $349.95.  Try a Taylor Made 300 series driver or the new Nike.  Both offer the latest technology and they are priced at the $299.95 level.

The hottest putter in the shop has been the Callaway two-ball.  I’m sure you have seen them on television with many of the men and women pros using them.  Callaway has addressed the two critical elements in putting: alignment and distance control.  The two-ball alignment system helps you square the clubface properly and the extended mallet style reduces backspin at impact to help get your ball rolling more quickly.  Stop by either golf shop to give a two-ball a try.

We will talk with you again next month….
