2007 Player of the Year Announced

Laura Eberhard, age 17, has been named the 2007 JGA Player of the Year.  Eberhard, a senior at Mattawan has been a long-time participant in the JGA.  “I remember playing 3 holes at Red Arrow in the 10 & under age group with my parents helping me along.  I’ve played every year since”, says Eberhard.  “I like the atmosphere the JGA provides where I can have good competition while playing with teammates and friends.”

Laura has been a consistent competitor over the years with wins in every age division.  Her 2007 scoring average of 86.4 was highlighted by an 81 at Milham Park and a win at Gull Lake shooting 88.  She finished in the top 3 in 5 of the 6 events she participated in.  “My goals this fall are to break 80, help my team win conference and make it to the state tournament and improve my finish from last time.”

Her name will be added to the JGA Player of the Year trophy on display at Milham Park Golf Club.  “I’m honored to win the award.  There are a lot of good players’ names on the trophy.”

“Laura is a great role model for all JGA participants,” says JGA Director Dean Marks.  “She is always smiling and happy to be on the golf course.”

Eberhard wasn’t the only player to play well this season.  The boys had strong competition with Patrick Werme, Aaron Cox, Brad Phares, Blake Mortellaro, Scotty Sulka, Jon Christ and Sheldon Keyte (2006 JGA POY) all winning events in the 15-17 age division.  Other girls winning 15-17 events were Brooke Hovenkamp, Elizabeth Ecker (2), Ashley Arnoldi and Jessica Capron (2).

The JGA had another successful season with 360 participants broken into 4 age groups and participating in 29 total events.  The JGA was established in 1987 with the purpose of providing quality golf experiences for area juniors at affordable rates.  The JGA is headquartered at Grand Prairie Golf Course, 388-4447, and has information available online at www.kalamazoogolf.org/junior

The JGA would like to thank all host courses for their support which allows the organization to be so successful.

The JGA Player of the Year is awarded to the individual who has shown outstanding abilities based on the following criteria:  participation in events, scoring average, order of finish in each event, competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
